Abstrakt: Possibly well over 100 wooden survey towers were built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Germany. None have survived in physical form, but new photographic and archival finds have recently revealed some truly breathtaking structures. After 1934/35 all German wooden survey towers were required to be constructed according to a specification or regulations manual. The manual, which is little known, even in professional circles, is the only known source of practical information. It describes details of the design, construction and assembly of various types of towers right down to the last detail, except for the height, that was always individually determined on site. This paper will discuss the design, construction and assembly of these little known towers and summarize the current state of the historical research and present the some aspects of the construction.
