Abstrakt: The subject of this paper is the investigation about footbridges recently built in China, with the aim to highlight how some experiences offer promising design strategies. The purpose is to achieve a first knowledge on emerging trends, in order to leave behind an ineffective polarization of the debate among the opposite tendencies of globalization/tradition. Some recent realisations have been considered as representing key topics, and accurately illustrated: the attention has been focused on the relationship with site conditions, technical and structural elements and perceptive aspects. The main goal is to analyse how the output should involve the legacy of tradition in an innovative and contemporary way. The result are divided into two parts: the first one takes into consideration some footbridges spanning across rivers, the second one investigates some recent walkways over infrastructures, in order to taste the state of the art. Significant items emerge from the comparison of the different case studies. The capability to learn from the very essence of Chinese Garden tradition, driving the main design attitude toward the perceptive experience of the users: the considered footbridges fit harmoniously in the landscape, becoming a part of it, and in the meantime offer a vivid way to perceive it. The interpretation of a wider meaning of culture to refer to, including not just aesthetic features but technical ones as well, local know-how etc. The way to go beyond simple functional targets, making footbridges safe and pleasant places to stay in – not just to cross – within the increasingly busy street life.
